Accident Summary:

^WOBAKER^HAD JUST COMPLETED A COMBAT ASSAULT AND WAS ENROUTE TO DAK TO TO JOIN ANOTHER AIRCRAFT FOR A FLIGHT BACK TO HIS HOME STATION. THE PILOT,^CPT GERALD L. KNIERIEM^WAS IN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WHEN HE HEARD A "LOUD SQUEALING GRINDING" NOISE IN THE TRANSMISSION AREA.^WO BAKER^TOOK THE CONTROLS AND INFORMED THE OTHER AIRCRAFT THAT HE WAS GOING TO LAND TO CHECK THE AIRCRAFT. THE NEAREST SECURE AREA, OLD DAK TO WAS ABOUT 5 MILES TO THE WEST. AS HE STARTED HIS APPROACH, THE AIRCRAFT SUDDENLY YAWED 35-40 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT AND HAD NO RUDDER CONTROL. WO BAKER NOTIFIED THE OTHER AIRCRAFT, BIKINI 119 THAT HE HAD A TAIL ROTOR FAILURE AND THAT HE WAS GOING TO LAND AT OLD DAK TO. WHILE ON FINAL, HE ALLOWED THE AIRCRAFT TO DRIFT RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY AND^WO BAKER^ELECTED TO LAND ON THE HIGHWAY WHICH RUNS PARALLEL TO THE AIRSTRIP.^WO BAKER^THEN DECIDED THAT HE HAD TOO MUCH ALTITUDE AND ATTEMPTED A GO-AROUND. DURING THE GO-AROUND^WO BAKER^NOTICED TWO LARGE TREES IN HIS FLIGHT PATH AND DURING THE CLIMB OVER THEM HE ALLOWED HIS APRSPEED TO DISSIPATE. THE AIRCRAFT STARTED A NOSE LOW SPIN TO THE RIGHT. AFTER 3-5 TURNS, THE THROTTLE WAS CHOPPED AND THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE GROUND, IN A LAVEL ATTITUDE. THE SKIDS COLLAPSED AND THE MAIN ROTOR STRUCK THE GROUND. THE RESULTANT INBALLANCED FORCE ROLLED THE AIRCRAFT OVER ON ITS LEFT SIDE.\\
